Hello, I'm Tamara Johnson, your host of The Get Out of the Mud Show with your Weekly Quote and Assignment. Today's quote comes from Chin-Ning Chu. She said:
A successful life is one that is lived through understanding and pursuing one's own path, not chasing after the dreams of others.
- Chin-Ning Chu
Chin-Ning defines a successful life as one in which we understand and pursue our own path rather than being directed by others in which way we should go. This is a profound principle that is grounded in a necessary understanding of ourselves - it is the understanding that I have invited you to when I challenge you to pay attention to your feelings and to be compassionate toward the child within you.
Ultimately, in order to pursue our own dreams, we must understand our own fears, feelings and beliefs because the path toward the fulfillment of our dreams requires a fearless, relentless soul-searching every time we encounter an obstacle that seems to drain our motivation toward our goals. When we feel hesitation and want to stop, that is the very invitation provided by our fears and doubts to understand ourselves more deeply and thus, overcome the obstacle we face. There is one essential difference between people who pursue their own paths and those who chase someone else's dreams. That difference is courage. A person who pursues her own path experiences doubt and fear as an opportunity to grow and overcome. Someone who chases another person's dream sees doubt and fear as a reason to stop and decide that the dream is unobtainable.
In order to pursue our own dreams, we must really understand ourselves and be compassionate toward ourselves as we seek to explore and eliminate all of the excuses, inspired by doubt and fear, that the unbelieving part of ourselves can conjure up.
Only then will we be on our way to making our own dreams into realities.
